The Big Butterfly Count begins on Friday 12th July 2024 and will run until Sunday 4th August.
It is time again for the Big Butterfly Count. So please, with your favourite drink, find a sunny spot outdoors to stay still for 15 minutes, settle back, and give yourselves a break. According to Butterfly Conservation, half of Britain’s remaining butterfly species are now on the Red List, which means that they are threatened or near threatened with extinction. As butterflies and moths are an important indicator of the health of our environment, a reduction in their numbers like this is a cause for serious concern. What you can do:
Go to https://butterfly-conservation.org/
Download the butterfly ID chart or free app for iOS and Android to identify and record the butterflies you spot.
Count the butterflies and moths.
Then submit your findings, either on their website or via their App.
If you don’t have access to the net or App, count your butterflies and ask a friend to upload your count- you might even encourage them to follow your example.
