As we have journeyed through Lent, pilgrims together, following Jesus on the way to the cross and his resurrection, the shops are filled with chocolate eggs in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Easter eggs are a symbol of new life, and their hollow centres portray the empty tomb of Jesus. Since eggs were historically forbidden in Lent, we can easily see how decorating and eating them became a wonderful way of celebrating the season – particularly when coated in chocolate! However, Easter, for me, is not just about chocolate eggs and bunny rabbits. Though I do enjoy chocolate Easter eggs, Easter is a time that holds a deeper meaning – one of renewal and hope.
Easter is a reminder to us It is a reminder that even in our darkest moments there is always a glimmer of hope, a chance for a fresh start. The disciples, as they watched Jesus on the cross, would have felt that all was lost, that it was all over. Yet the reality of Easter is the truth that from that dark moment came the most powerful new beginning for us all! Hope came to earth, in the middle of darkness. What a message that is for a violent and anxious world! Easter reminds us that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Easter is a message of resilience, strength, and an unbreakable love.
One of the things I love most about Easter is the idea of renewal. The timing of Easter coincides with Spring, which feels like nature’s way of hitting the reset button. As I am sat writing this reflection I can see the daffodils in the Rectory garden blooming, and the plants that were sleeping over winter coming back to life! Just as the flowers start to bloom and the days get longer Easter reminds us that we too can shed our old habits and embrace new beginnings. It is a time to let go of past mistakes and move forward with a renewed sense of purpose and direction. In many ways, Jesus hit the ultimate reset button for each of us, the old order of things passed away and the new has come – the resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate victory!
Easter is a fun time filled with family gatherings, days out together and Easter egg hunts and it is a time for community and celebration, to connect with loved ones and share in the joy of this special occasion. However we celebrate, the resurrection of Jesus is the hope for all of us.
