As the summer holidays draw to a close and the gentle arrival of Autumn approaches, I find myself reflecting on the concept of new beginnings. Having retired from one role I am now looking forward with eager anticipation to my licensing as Rector of the Barrow Benefice and to the many opportunities this new chapter may bring. This sense of hope and excitement extends not only to myself and the Barrow Benefice but also to everyone facing their own new ventures – whether it involves starting a new job, moving on from an old one, embarking on the first days of school, or returning for another academic year.
Growing up in a family of teachers, September has always carried special significance for me. It is a time filled with optimism – a chance to start anew and to welcome the possibilities that the coming months may hold. The beginning of the school year offers a distinctive sense of renewal in our lives, encouraging us all to turn over a new leaf.
Children return to their classrooms with open minds, ready to learn and grow. This period is one where new friendships are formed and old ones rekindled, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere. Teachers, too, approach the year with renewed enthusiasm, to inspire and nurture the young minds entrusted to their care.
Within our community, we play a vital role in supporting one another. We recognise that starting school – whether it is a child’s first day in Reception or a pupil returning for their final year – can bring its own set of worries. It is important that we offer encouragement, prayers, and practical help wherever it is needed in our communities. We can simply provide a kind word to a neighbour navigating the advent of something new!
The new ‘school’ year is not without its challenges. Adjusting to new routines and meeting expectations, can be daunting for many. Yet, we are reassured by the knowledge that God is with us in all that we do. In the words of one of my favourite hymns ‘Great is your faithfulness, morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed your hand has provided great is your faithfulness, Lord unto me.
‘Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23
Let us take a moment to offer a blessing for everyone embarking on a new ‘school’ year, whether they are returning to the classroom, starting a new job, or beginning retirement. With faith and fellowship, we welcome the new ‘school’ year as an opportunity to nurture not only young minds but also the heart of our community.
