There has long been concerns that carbon markets do little to mitigate the climate crisis or the destruction of nature, and that companies exploit carbon markets as a licence to pollute. Even so, COP 28 saw a revival of interest in carbon markets from governments, conservation organisations and Industry groups. Some leading conservation NGOs and industry groups have said companies that buy carbon credits are largely doing so alongside emissions cuts and are not using offsets as a reason to keep polluting. Carbon Market Watch, however, have revealed, that the evidence says the opposite. So, watch out for companies planting trees – it may be their way of hiding their inability or disinterest in following a scientifically based fossil fuel phase out.
